Going South

Follow me as I adapt to southern living and see the world one weekend at a time

1 note

Last weekend at Sundance was everything that I hoped it would be. I got to see “Celeste & Jesse Forever” and “Arbitrage” which were two of the biggest films of this year’s festival. We got up at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning to get on the waitlist line for the 9AM showing of Celeste & Jesse which starred Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg and Elijah Wood. It was showing at the Eccles Center which is the largest Sundance venue and seats over 1200 people. We were around number 160 in line so it seemed like our odds of getting in were slim, but we did! The film was great and it was unexpected that the director and cast were there for a Q&A after. Andy Samberg (of “I’m On a Boat” fame) is absolutely hilarious, although his role in the film was somewhat serious which was interesting to see.

I had a somewhat more glamorous experience seeing Arbitrage on Saturday night. One of my best friends from high school is family friends with the director, Nicholas Jarecki, and she was able to score me a filmmaker’s comp ticket which was incredible! We hung out in the green room before the film started and met Sharlto Copley who B quickly recognized as the guy from District 9 and also met Nate Parker who was in Arbitrage as well as the new Red Tails movie that just came out.

Richard Gere was sitting just a couple rows behind us during the premiere which was awesome! He seemed like a really down to earth normal guy, and his wife is adorable. Arbitrage was a fantastic movie. I’m really excited for it to come out in theaters and see it again. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and really didn’t know how it would end. It was bought last week for $2.5M so I’m sure Nick is very happy.

It snowed the entire day on Saturday so there were 12+ inches of new snow for a snow shoe adventure on Sunday and it was a beautiful, sunny day for it. The 2 miles up were pretty tough since no one else had been on the trail with the new snow on it, but we saw some moose tracks which was cool.

All in all a once in a lifetime weekend that I’ll never forget! Great to share it with friends and family, and I hope I can go back next year.

Arbitrage

I can’t even begin to figure out what to pack for my trip to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City this weekend. I’m heading out there for a weekend with my parents, but my amazing friend B will be there as well and got me a ticket for the premiere of Nicholas Jarecki’s Arbitrage starring Susan Sarandon and Richard Gere! What does one wear to a red carpet event in Utah when it’s 20 degrees and snowing?! I’m thinking a dress, tights and boots might do the trick. I think it’s going to be a fabulous weekend. Hoping for some good celebrity sightings!

There’s a great spa in Park City called Mountain Body and, in addition to a full menu of services, they also have a little store where you can purchase all their products. When I was there over the holidays, I bought their lavender and tangerine Mountain Glow and it is a-mazing. So far I’ve just used it on my hands and it makes them really soft and it smells sooo good!! I think $20 for 8oz is fairly reasonable too. Check out their full line of products which are all online.

We had SUCH a fun sister’s weekend in Dallas! Activities included:

*White pizza & wine at Coalvines

*Watching the Cotton Bowl

*Driving range & batting cages at Top Golf (sissy’s favorite!)

*Blue (limit 2) drinks at Mattito’s

*Yummy Mexican dinner at Mi Cocina

*Drinks at Prime Bar with Glenn from Most Eligible Dallas

*Seeing New Years Eve in a private screening room in Highland Park Village

*Cooking our own (delicious, I might add) Thai noodle feast

We really did a lot for just one weekend! It was so great to have her here. Other than the fact that she takes up three quarters of the bed, of course. ;)

Indeed! And that’s why I’m SOOOOO excited that I get to see mine tomorrow!! Lots of fun plans like Mexican food, blue lagoons, Top Golf and baking cupcakes. Lots of visitors in town for the Cotton Bowl tomorrow night so it’s definitely going to be a fun weekend.

One of my mom’s favorites appetizers to make when we have family functions is baked brie, and I decided it would be the perfect thing to make for New Years Eve at our apartment. I had never done it before, but it is unbelievably easy and who doesn’t love cheese wrapped in pastry? No one. Here’s the Pillsbury recipe:
INGREDIENTS

1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® Crescent Recipe Creations® refrigerated seamless dough sheet

1 round (8 oz) Brie cheese

1 egg, beaten

DIRECTIONS
 Heat oven to 350°F.
If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough; separate crosswise into 2 sections. Pat dough and firmly press perforations to seal, forming 2 squares. If using dough sheet: Unroll dough; cut crosswise into 2 rectangles. Pat dough to form 2 squares.
Place 1 square on ungreased cookie sheet. Place cheese on center of dough. With small cookie or canapé cutter, cut 1 shape from each corner of remaining square; set cutouts aside.
Place remaining square on top of cheese round. Press dough evenly around cheese; fold bottom edges over top edges. Gently stretch dough evenly around cheese; press to seal completely. Brush with beaten egg. Top with cutouts; brush with additional beaten egg. Bake 20 to 24 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 15 minutes. Serve warm.
